Steward (volunteer)

The Steward Foundation of Careibu is looking for a new steward. As a steward, you help ensure that Careibu stays true to its mission, values and organisational model over the long term.

From an independent position, you look along, ask critical questions and help test important choices against what Careibu exists for and where we want to go.

What is a steward?

Careibu has been steward-owned since 2025. That means control of the organisation is separated from financial ownership. The shares with voting rights are held by the Steward Foundation. The stewards who govern this foundation are therefore responsible for Careibu’s mission, direction and continuity.

A steward looks beyond the issues of the day. Together with the other stewards, you make sure important choices fit Careibu’s mission and values and contribute to a healthy organisation in the long term.

You act in the interest of Careibu and its social mission. Any profit available for distribution goes via the Careibu Foundation (ANBI) back to the social mission. That way it is also financially secured that the value Careibu creates ultimately contributes to what the organisation exists for.

The Steward Foundation also guards the principles of steward ownership and brings an independent perspective to important strategic, organisational, governance or social questions.

Is this you?

We are looking for someone who likes to look beyond the issues of the day. Someone who is curious, dares to be critical, and at the same time trusts the people who shape the organisation day to day.

We are looking for someone who:

  • is interested in Careibu’s social mission and development
  • listens well, asks follow-up questions and can connect different perspectives
  • can look independently and constructively critically
  • dares to ask important questions, even when they are not always easy
  • has an eye for the long term and for the continuity of an organisation
  • has affinity with social impact and organisations that are organised differently
  • enjoys thinking along on strategic, organisational and governance questions

Experience with steward ownership, self-organisation (Holacracy), governance, social organisations or entrepreneurship is a plus, but not a requirement.

What you do

As a steward, you help ensure that Careibu stays true to its mission, values and organisational model.

You:

  • take part 4 times a year in the quarterly steward meeting, where Careibu’s development, important strategic choices and the long term are discussed
  • ask questions and give feedback from an independent position
  • help keep the mission and continuity of the organisation central, including during future leadership changes or generational transitions
  • are available as an independent sounding board for governance, ethical or organisational dilemmas
  • help ensure that the principles of steward ownership, Holacracy and governance integrity are upheld
  • look along to see whether important choices fit Careibu’s identity and long-term direction

You do not need to have an opinion on everything. A good steward is someone who knows how to ask the right questions and leaves room for others to take their responsibility.

How much time does it take?

Good stewardship mainly asks for meaningful attention at the moments that matter.

You can count on four fixed meetings a year, and occasionally a request to think along on a strategic, organisational or governance question.

We ask you to commit to Careibu for at least three years, so you can really get to know the organisation and its development and contribute from continuity.

The role is unpaid and easy to combine with other work.

What you bring

We are looking for someone who recognises themselves in the following:

  • you can look independently and carefully at developments within an organisation
  • you are curious and enjoy asking deeper questions
  • you are constructively critical and dare to bring in another perspective
  • you can weigh and connect different interests and perspectives
  • you have affinity with social impact
  • you feel at home in an organisation where responsibility and ownership are widely shared
  • you are willing to commit to Careibu’s mission for a longer period (at least 3 years)
  • bonus: you have experience with steward ownership and/or forms of self-organisation (Holacracy, sociocracy, teal, etc.)

What you get

As a steward, you get the chance to contribute your experience, perspective and commitment to the future of an organisation that works from steward ownership.

You join an organisation where:

  • the mission is more important than individual interest
  • responsibility and ownership are widely shared
  • there is room for different perspectives
  • we believe in trust and self-organisation
  • you actually have a say in important decisions and the long-term development of the organisation

The time investment is limited, while at important moments you can make a real difference.
