Careibu
For seniors

A companion for you, an experience for them

Careibu puts you in touch with a committed young person from the neighbourhood. From a cup of coffee, a walk, to a museum visit: bringing generations together brings so much good for both sides!

Introduction

A companion that fits you

Whether you enjoy walking, having coffee together, or need help with daily things: there is a companion who fits you. Our companions are young volunteers aged 17 to 30 who visit weekly or every other week. Careibu carefully supports every match, so you feel comfortable.

This fits you if:

  • You are 65 or older (we sometimes make an exception, e.g. for a chronic illness)
  • You live in the Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Delft, Leiden or The Hague region
  • You like the idea of spending time with a young person
  • You are curious about a different generation

An open, fresh perspective

Young people see the world differently and bring new energy and ideas.

Doing something good

They sign up because they genuinely want to mean something to someone else, not because they have to.

Looking for life experience

Your stories, wisdom and way of life are valuable for them to learn from.

You both grow from it!

You get company; they learn from your experience. Both of you have something to offer.

How it works

How it works

  1. Get in touch

Sign up through our website. A family member or friend can also do this for you. Not able to go online? Feel free to call us on 085 – 016 00 48 and we will help you further.

  2. Your profile

Once you have signed up, we will give you a call. Together we discuss what you need and what you would like to do with your companion, and go through the key details of the project, such as being matched for 4 to 6 months and that taking part is free of charge. You can ask any questions at this point.

  3. Get acquainted

As soon as a young person near you fits your request, we introduce the match to you. If you agree, we connect you both and share contact details, after which the young person contacts you to arrange a first meeting.

  4. Enjoy the company

You meet your companion regularly and arrange this together. Our colleagues are always available for any questions.

  5. And after that?

Still enjoying each other’s company after 4 to 6 months? Then you and your companion can decide together to keep seeing each other, and we extend the match. If your companion can no longer continue, we reopen your request and look for a new companion for you.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

What does support through Careibu cost?

The companionship itself is free. We work with volunteers who enjoy spending time with you. Any activities you do together with the young person are at your own expense.

How do I know a companion is trustworthy?

Careibu supports every match and ensures a careful introduction and clear agreements. All young people apply for a certificate of conduct (VOG) beforehand. You can also indicate where you would prefer to meet β€” that can be at your home, but also somewhere in public, for example.

Can my family help with signing up?

Of course. Loved ones are welcome to be involved and help decide. Feel free to contact us together.

What is in my profile? / What happens to my details?

Your privacy stays protected: we use a different name and a standard image, so you are not recognisable. The request states, for example, your hobbies, what kind of companion you are looking for, and how often you would like to meet.

Am I a good fit for this companionship project?

Every senior is welcome to sign up and we do our best to find a suitable companion for everyone. It does help if you are open to a younger generation and enjoy connecting with them. A bit of curiosity goes a long way!

What can I expect from a young person as a companion?

Good to know: young people are not professional carers. Their main goal is companionship and making contact. You're welcome to ask for the occasional household favour, such as a small errand, help with technical things, or moving a cupboard. But your companion should not be seen as cleaning help or medical care.

I have physical or mental health issues β€” can I still sign up for this project?

Of course you can sign up. Feel free to share what is going on when you apply, so we can look together at what is possible and find what suits you. Our companions are volunteers, not care professionals, so for some kinds of support they are not the right person. But companionship and attention are an important remedy too, and that is exactly what our companions have to offer.
