Steward (volunteer) with a financial focus

The Steward Foundation of Careibu is looking for a new external steward with a financial focus. As a steward, you help ensure that Careibu stays true to its mission, values and organisational model over the long term.

You are not a director of day-to-day operations, but an independent sparring partner who contributes to a healthy, future-proof organisation through financial knowledge, commitment and a long-term perspective.

What is a steward?

A steward is not a traditional director or supervisor. In steward-owned organisations, stewards have one central task: protecting the mission, values and long-term continuity of the organisation.

Read more about steward ownership here!

That means they are not responsible for day-to-day operations, but they do help ensure that important choices stay in line with the purpose the organisation exists for.

Stewards do not act from personal or financial interest, but from what is best for the mission and the future of the organisation.

At Careibu, the Steward Foundation fulfils this role. It guards the principles of steward ownership and offers an independent perspective when important strategic, financial or organisational questions arise.

Is this you?

We are looking for someone who likes to look beyond the numbers alone. Someone who can interpret financial information, but also understands that numbers are ultimately a means to make social impact possible. You do not need to be an accountant or a finance director.

Above all, we are looking for someone who:

  • is financially well grounded
  • has experience with budgets, financial decision-making or financial oversight
  • dares to ask critical questions
  • has affinity with social impact
  • enjoys thinking along about the long term of an organisation

Experience with steward ownership, self-organisation or Holacracy is a plus, but not a requirement.

What you do

As a steward, you help ensure that Careibu stays true to its mission, values and organisational model.

You:

  • take part in the annual steward meeting, where last year’s results, the financial overview and the multi-year plan are discussed
  • look critically at budgets, financial choices and the financial health of the organisation
  • ask questions, give feedback and help make risks and blind spots visible
  • help keep the mission and Theory of Change central, including during future leadership changes or generational transitions
  • are available as an independent sounding board for governance, ethical or organisational dilemmas
  • help ensure that the principles of steward ownership, Holacracy and governance integrity are upheld

We believe good stewardship does not have to take a lot of time, but it does ask for meaningful attention at the moments that matter. You can count on on average two meetings a year, and occasionally a request to think along on a financial, strategic or governance question.

The time investment is limited and flexible, and easy to combine with other work.

What you bring

We are looking for someone who recognises themselves in the following:

  • you have experience with finance, budgets, annual accounts or financial management
  • you can translate financial information into clear insights and good questions
  • you are independent, careful and constructively critical
  • you feel at home in organisations that work from trust, responsibility and social impact
  • you are willing to commit to the organisation’s mission for a longer period
  • bonus: you have experience with steward ownership and/or forms of self-organisation (Holacracy, sociocracy, teal, etc.)

What you get

As a steward, you get the chance to contribute your knowledge and experience to the future of an organisation that works from steward ownership.

You join an environment where:

  • the mission is more important than individual interest
  • responsibility and ownership are widely shared
  • there is room for different perspectives
  • you actually have influence on the long-term development of the organisation

The time investment is limited, but the impact of the role can be large.
