A year with my buddy Hans: how volunteering turned into friendship

Almost a year ago, Mattia joined Careibu's senior-student programme. Without knowing exactly what to expect, he decided to share his time with someone who could use a bit of company. "I wanted to make a difference," he says. "But I never expected to get so much back myself."

Mattia was soon matched with his buddy Hans. Their first meeting went in a memorable way: "I was standing there a bit lost at a bus stop, and then Hans showed up on his bike to pick me up," he recalls with a laugh. What began with a cup of coffee at Hans's house turned out to be the start of a close bond.

Over the following months, their contact grew into far more than just a volunteering relationship. "We started with simple conversations, but soon we were sharing stories about our childhoods, travels, family and life lessons. I discovered just how much wisdom and history is packed into Hans's stories — someone more than twice my age. Connection is timeless!"

What struck him most is that loneliness isn't always visible. "Hans is one of the most sociable, lively people I know," he says. "And yet he's glad to take part in this programme. It's not just about reducing loneliness — it's also about creating connection. And that connection works both ways."

His experiences with Hans have shown Mattia that growing older doesn't mean slowing to a stop. "In Hans's case, it actually means enjoying life to the fullest," he explains. "The programme gave me a friendship that has enriched my life. It reminds me that we all need connection, regardless of our age."

After nearly a year, Mattia looks back with great gratitude. "What started as volunteer work grew into a valuable friendship," he concludes. "I'd recommend everyone become a buddy. You give time and attention, but you get so much more back in return."
